MENOPAUSE IS WHEN YOU HAVEN"T HAD A PERIOD FOR 12 MONTHS
You then have to track back to the date of that last period and this is your Menopause moment - everything that happens after this date is then called Post-Menopause
The last period occurs at different ages for different women - the average age in New Zealand is 51, but the range is anywhere from age 45 to 55.
Between the ages 40 to 45, this is called Early Menopause.
Before the age of 40, this is called Premature Menopause.
Perimenopause is the time when our hormone levels begin to change and fluctuate because we are starting the transition towards menopause (the ending of our periods). The symptoms can be subtle at first and look a lot like other conditions. Which is part of what makes it under-recognised.
The hormones don't just stop one day - they fluctuate. There can be sudden surges, followed by sudden drops and the nice monthly rhythm starts to get lost. Blood tests can be normal in perimenopause.
There are many other symptoms :
Allergies, Bloating, Body odour, Bone fractures, Breast soreness, Brittle nails, Burning mouth, Decrease in libido (sex drive), Dental & Gum problems, Dry itchy skin, Dizziness, Electric shocks, Joint pain, Hair loss, Headaches, Hot flushes, Irregular periods / change in periods, Muscle tension / restless legs, Nausea & digestive issues, Night sweats, Palpitations / irregular heartbeat, Tingling extremities and Urinary symptoms (stress incontinence)
